Structures

This is a new category. The other four groups were easy to determine, this one took a while. My goal with this grouping was to showcase natural structures, man-made structures, landscapes and abstract forms.

Bridges - gallery - For me bridges are floating roadways and I love shooting them. Pittsburgh has a vast inventory of these connectors. An inventory that spans the centuries; the twins - The Fort Pitt Bridge and The Fort Duquesne Bridge; the triplets - The Sixth-Street Bridge, The Seventh-Street Bridge and The Ninth-Street Bridge; The Jail Bridge modeled on the Venetian Bridge of Sighs; The Sixteenth Street Bridge with its oxidized copper ornamentations.
The bridge at St. Joe's Island is an interruption for me. I remember taking the ferry across the channel and the bridge, beautifully sleek and airy, interferes with this memory.

Maine Steeples - gallery - Steeples have always held a fascination for me. Their simple lines, their silhouette in the landscape, call back an ancient time of serfs, and monks. Their bells call all to Vespers; call all to Mass.
The gallery of images is from my trip to south-eastern Maine. These images represent the classic New England steeples - protestant, wooden, white spires. In the blustery September winds, these white sentinels stood gallant against the coming December gloom. But the pastoral languor and autumn colors they guard will be lost in the rush to industrialized winter.

Silhouettes - gallery - I liked the idea of capturing the setting sun as it altered the landscape. Not knowing how to use aperture and shutter speed correctly, I let the camera determine the settings. The results were abstract images that defined a tone and an atmosphere I liked.
The first four were shot at St. Mary's Cemetery in the North Hills and represent cruciform grave-markers. The two with a blue sky were shot in the morning light. These are of the Mattress Factory on the North Side. The second set of nine is all from West View Cemetery again in the North Hills. All color is lost and only the sky is alight.
