sault ste marie

This set of photographs was taken August, 2008. The images show two sides of Sault Ste Marie, the wilderness and the locks.

Sault Ste Marie sits at the confluence of three of the Great Lakes - Superior, Michigan and Huron. It was founded by French fur-trappers and its geographical position has kept it at the center of east west commerce. The Soo Locks are among the busiest in the world.

The small city is an oasis in the wilderness. Northern Ontario is rich in natural resources and poor in population. Its summer beauty is short-lived and winter dominates one's experiece.

The images capture the brief time between spring's thaw and autumn's long treck into winter.
