spring in pittsburgh

Spring in Pittsburgh is littered with wild almond. The almond trees paint the winter-dirty streets white. This is especially true in rehabbed neighborhoods where the city planted these early-bloomers.

The spring pastels are weak, but seeing plant-life color the winter-ravaged beds allows me to forgive nature her first efforts.

I have never been able to grow spring bulbs. The only ones that come up are snow-drops. But for me snow-drops are associated more with late winters in Italy than early spring in Pittsburgh. (There were snow-drop pictures in my elementary school reader.)

Two great discoveries from last week-end, the crab apple on the Community College campus and the star-flowers in Diane's front yard. She can grow bulbs. (The thumbnail points to the large image.)
