the porter grave-marker

The bronze figure is a replica cast, after 1910, from the original granite angel. The angel was cast by Brenda Putman.

This large composition, in Allegheny Cemetery, sits on the small rise dominating the landscape. The graves below her are dwarfed by this herald that seems to be walking away. The family name in on the back of the grave marker.

The shadow of the hand with its compliment in bronze is the reason for this image. The gray granite, the green bronze and the black shadow are topped by a hint of blue sky through winter wood.

The mournful face is softened by the elements that raged in old Pittsburgh's skies. The weather and the residue of years of steel mill emissions have pocked the oxidized copper. The face is sad; the eyes downcast. The dead she guards sleep.
