the king grave-marker

This figure marks a set of relatively new graves in Allegheny Cemetery. The name on the platform, that the figure is standing on, is King. However, there are several other family names in this group. The figure is angel-like, but with no wings. She carries a wreath and her robe is voluminous collecting at her feet creating a cloud-like base.

The figure is dressed in a warrior-maiden-like bodice. The collar is edged in a band of stars. This is in contrast to the gentle lines that define the face and the gesture of placing a wreath. The figure stands alone on a bluff.

The gray granite softens the mournful face. The hair falls gently and frames the strong, sad face. The hair is free of ornamentation. The figure does not belong to the turn of the century monuments, with their swords, crowns and anchors, that dot the landscape. (The thumbnail points to the large image.)
