st. joe's island

For many years, I've avoided going to Northern Ontario in early spring. It's a miserable time - cold, wet weather, dirty, sand-covered streets, black pactches of left-over winter snow. This year April in the Sault Ste Marie area was pretty and cool. I took the opportunity to drive out to the "Island" and shoot in the morning light. The island is St. Joseph Island at the end of the St. Mary's River and at the mouth of gigantic Lake Huron.

In memory it's the place where Mr. and Mrs. Pahl took us to pick blueberries and fish. Back in the 60's, access to the Island was on a car-ferry. And in my mind's eye the channel was always rough and passage a time to stay in the car and not look out. The crossing is now over a sleek cement structure that hides the old dock beneath its triangle pylons. The images are from the mainland side where we spent many hours waiting to get on the ferry. It was great to rediscover the area and to shoot on a clear, soft morning.

Walking the bolders down to the calm blue and shooting the still surface was a new memory.
