the rocks of superior

I've shot this area in all seasons, so walking the rocky beach after a thunder storm, I wasn't sure where to point the lens. Also, I'm careful out here because the rounded rocks make it treacherous. And they're everywhere.

The rocks that all disparage; that reduce property value; that hide the white sand; that you can't walk on. The rocks that lie beached in the shallows; that step into the deep; that sparkle blue and yellow. The rocks that hold hieroglyphs and skeletal remains; that perimeter the lake they call Gitche Gumee.

The granite dots became images and the camera a torch in the Seurat landscape. In the viewfinder were pictures never seen.

I saw a giant's knuckles, a hump-back whale, spinney raspberries, Dumbledore's pensieve, the ruby slippers, the mists of Avalon, a drift-wood shofar, and three spirits divining the darkness.

Walking the rocks down to the lapping blue became a journey into pointillism.
